To arrive at the most
accurate water usage in gallons per day(gpd - also known as the Average Daily Flow ADF), for
engineering discussions and calculations found in Section III, an average effluent gpd value will be
calculated as an average between the years 2015 and 2016 as illustrated in Table 1. During this
time frame the Restaurant operated full-time. The calculated ADF = 1,302 + 1,417=2 = 1360 gpd.
B. ARCO Service Station /Convenience Store
Influent volumes from the ARCO facility will flow from fixture units as denoted on the attached
Fixture Unit Description Chart. These include toilets, sinks, coffee machines, beverage machines
and floor drains for refrigeration condensate. Influent characteristics are a combination of
blackwater, graywater and clear water condensate. The percentages of these sources contributing
to the total volume of waste water influent are unknown and unpredictable.
Although certain publications estimate wastewater flows based upon fixture units (e.g., California
Plumbing Code - CPC), it is virtually impossible to accurately determine flow volumes based on
fixture units. The CPC assigns 1,000 gallons per day for service stations with one bay(for
mechanical work) and an additional 500 gpd for an additional bay. The proposed ARCO Station will
have no mechanic's bay. The San Joaquin County EHD Sewage Standards assign 10 gallons per
vehicle. However, there is no method to determine the number of daily vehicles once this facility is
operational and at 10 gallons/vehicle, the daily flow volume projections would be astronomical.
Therefore, an average daily flow(ADF) for the ARCO facility will be derived pragmatically under
worst-case scenario conditions. The highest wastewater flows will originate from the two toilets
and two lavatories. A value of 1.6 gallons per flush and 0.5 gallons for hand washing for an
approximate 2.0 gallons is assigned for each use. If the two restrooms are used under maximum
conceivable conditions of every 15 minutes,the ADF =2.0 gals x 4x/hr x 24 hrs/day x 3 restrooms
= 576 gpd. Factoring in remaining flows from the other fixtures, such as refrigeration
condensation and ice machines of approximately 424 gallons, a value of 1,000 gallons per day of
effluent volume originating from the ARCO Service Station/Convenience Store is derived, thus
correlating with the CPC value. This value will also be used for filter bed design purposes.
Chesney Consulting
