Soil Chemical Analysis
The capability of soil to receive agricultural waste is classified in three categories: slight, moderate and
severe. Each labeling the soils' capability limitations to the applications of agricultural waste.
The following categories represent specific areas that are commonly used to evaluate soil.
• Available water capacity:
Site conditions of>6.0" are considered to have slight limitations
Site conditions of 3.0" to 6.0"are considered to have moderate limitations
Site conditions of<3.0" are considered to have severe limitations
Soils 195,236 and W are considered to have severe limitations to applications of agricultural waste. It is
recommended to reduce application rates and t=sesp t in
applications for contaminants can flow deep into /
the soil profile due to low retention from the soil. Applications of agricultural wastes improve available
water capacity.
Soils 193 are considered to have moderate limitations to applications of agricultural waste. It is
recommended to reduce application rates for contaminants can flow deep into the soil profile due to low
retention from the soil. Applications of agricultural wastes improve available water capacity
• Dense layer(Bulk density),grams/cc:
All the soils are considered to be<1.7 grams/cc,which classifies them as having a slight limitation to
applications of agricultural wastes. It is recommended that applications of solids are when soil moisture
content is such that the field is in tillable condition. Applications reduce Milk density and minimize
compaction.
• Cation exchange,meq/100g of soil:
Site conditions of>15 are considered to have slight limitations
Site conditions of 5 to 15 are considered to have moderate limitations
Site conditions of<5 are considered to have severe limitations
Soils 182 had test results of 9.4, which is considered to have moderate limitations to applications of
agricultural wastes. It is recommended that this is a relatively low adsorption and exchange of cations and
heavy metals. Soil monitoring of element concentrations through the soil profile is recommended to
evaluate farming practices and application rates of manure solids and nutrient laden water.
Soil#: Cation exchange Limitations
Capacity, mmeq/100g
182 9.4 Moderate
237 9.8- 13.8 Moderatg__
236 24:5 Slight
Soils off site that have been tested:
Soil#: Cation exchange Limitations
Capacity, mmeq/100g
102 7.7 Moderate
220 25.7 Slight
219 28.6 Slight
L93 28.0 Slight
241 7.8 Moderate
Western Design/David Avila 2000 14
