Gou l d and the entire p 1 annn i ng Staff : PLANNING WISION
This letter in response to - the Planning bivisions. appiications
#SA-93-0003 & #SA-93-0004. . .We are adamantly opposed to this
development as we were to the one proposed last Novemeber. We
believe that the main reason for Sierra Hill 's withdrawal of their
former plan is due to the united and unexpected opposition that we
and approximately twenty other homeowners and farmers. put up at
the hearing.
Sierra Hills has revised their plan. The plan is essentially the
same' as the one proposed in November . However, the new plant .will
be larger than the- old plant (consist of 159,000' sq. ft .\ instead
of #29,000 sq. ft . ) , and will generate even more truck traffic.
The issue of traffic and safety does not go away by simply
rerouting initial traffic from Fairchild Rd. to. Jack Tone Rd. The
argu.ementthat most trucks will Vse Fairchild Road because _it__-is
the shortest route to Highway 99 or Interstate. 6 is still. .valid.
To prove our point , countless residents gave verbal testimony In
Nov. about all -types of. trucks ( 18 wheelers, double trailers,
refridgerated, . flat beds, etc. ) already using Falrch ..ld.-Road,
Sierra Hills redoing their plans- .does not solve the problem of
unsafe .truck . traf f i c _on.- Fal:rch 1-- cr The 'truci dr i~vers_w 11;1: -
continue to use Fairchild because It- s_ the shortest way back :to
the freeway . This so .c-ailed "seasonal, locale
cnecry packing shed" operation , if approved, will become a year
round ousiness that will bring in produce from all over the
Western United States, pack not only cherries but all sorts of
and vegetacies through out the entire year , . and ship the
rruit oack to markets all over the United States and Pacific Rim
countries. This all translates into additional truck traffic up
and down Fairchild Road and Jack Tone Road all year long! ! ! !
Sierra Hills is big business! Big business belongs ln . non-farm
areas. The argument that this "packing shed" needs to be near
their customers farms is- baloney. In the Oct. 1992 issue of. Frult
Growers Magazine it stated that Sierra Hills packs apples of.
" for 30 growers spread from Yuba Clty in the north to Visalia in.
the South . Besides selling apples in Washington , Sierra Hills has
a, active customer list throughout much of the West , Midwest , and
Eastern .U.S. , plus brisk export sales to several. Pacific Rim .
countries. " The article further states that Sierra Hills not only
