The EHD is requiring the two 6 inch boreholes be completely grouted with
neat cement. I presume that this refers to the open portion of the holes
only? Lower portions of the holes that have collapsed need not be re-
drilled just to fill, as long as the open portion of the drill hole is grouted to
form a cement plug?
2. The EHD is requiring the smaller reduced shaft (5' by 5') to be backfilled with
native soil cuttings. Please confirm that this means that the timber box
shoring can be abandoned in place.
3. The EHD is requiring that all materials used for the construction of the
largest shaft (wood lagging, steel rings, corrugated metal pipe) be completely
removed WHY? Standard practice in other jurisdictions would have only
the top 5 feet below finish grade removed and all shoring below abandoned
in place. I am curious as to the technical reason for this request that will
cost the county tens of thousands of dollars and then backfilled with native
soil cuttings.
4. Due to the intricate design and amount of construction involved for the
largest shaft, the EHD can review and take into consideration any alternative
well destruction methods proposed by the contractor. It is my professional
opinion that grouting the open portions of the drill holes and abandoning
the shoring in place as the excavation is backfilled with native soil cuttings
is all that should be done save cutting off and removing the portion of the
CMP sticking above grade as a safety barrier. This procedure will protect
the aquifer and make sure that all steel, timber and concrete are 30 feet or
lower than grade. I do not see the need for the County to spend tens of
thousands of dollars removing the shoring.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Thanks,
Ted Tasiopoulos
209-953-7698
209-815-5328
From: Bassett, Chanda [mailto:CBassettCalsigov.org]
2/22/2013
