Drill Tech is the drilling
contractor on site and Public Works will be responsible for the natural soil movement
portion of the backfill.
The total depth of the excavation within the well was 98 feet. There are two bore holes
(6 inches in diameter) within the well; one of which reached the ground water level at
160 feet.
The digging out of the shaft started at 10 feet below road level, where an 11 foot in
diameter corrugated metal pipe (CMP)was cemented 12 feet into the ground. A steel
ring was bolted to that CMP every 5 feet as the depth continued to the 70 foot depth.
Wood lagging was placed in between the steel rings in order to shore the walls of the
shaft as the depth continued, which looked similar to the inside of a wine barrel. From
the 70 foot depth, the shaft size was reduced to a 5 foot by 5 foot square which was
also lined with wood lagging to the final depth of approximately 98 feet. There was no
water used in/out of the well during the excavation.
Please advise me as to what measures need to be taken with regard to cement, grout,
etc. and whether or not the material used to shore the shaft can be left in place.
Again, I do not have any knowledge as to what needs to be done so please be as
specific as you can be so that I can forward this to Drill Tech and Public Works.
If you need additional information or have any questions, please let me know.
Thank you,
Chanda
Sergeant Chanda Bassett
San Joaquin County Sheriffs Office
Investigations Division -Cold Case Unit
(209) 468-4732 office
(209) 468-4380 fax
cbassett dsiaov.ora
2/22/2013
