Cc: Mondavi, Annette; Souza, David; Baker, Kevin; Marcus Knutson; dcook@sjgov.org;Ted
Tasiopoulos [EH]; Donna Heran [EH]; Michael Escotto [EH]
Subject: RE: Linden Well Excavation Completion
The preferred method for backfilling the excavation is for County Public works to dump
native soils down the shaft with the Cat 325 excavator. The shaft includes the 5'x5'timber
shored bottom section, the 10' diameter rind steel and lagged middle section, and the 11'
diameter top section. The dirt backfill would be placed after the drill holes and bottom 5
feet of the shaft are backfilled with the 10 sack sand slurry recommended by Environmental
Health.
Should Environmental Health require compaction of the shaft backfill, Drill Tech's services
would be required to either, 1) use crane and weight to compact, or 2) provide ventilation,
safety personnel and compaction equipment to compact soils within the shaft. Either of the
options will cost the county money and will be of dubious benefit because the top 12 or so
feet of the site will be backfilled with the County's conventional earthmoving equipment.
Brett K.
