WASTE DISCHARGE REQUIR9%dNTS ORDER NO.
GOLDSTONE LAND COMPANY,LLC AND KURT KAUTZ
BEAR CREEK WINERY
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
GROUNDWATER CONDITIONS
28. The winery is served by two deep groundwater production wells. The primary well is 135 feet
deep and the backup well is 342 feet deep. The well locations are shown on Attachment B2,
which is attached hereto and is made part of this Order by reference.
29. The primary well (shallow) produces water of lower quality than the backup (deep) well. Based
on analytical testing performed in April 2001, the water supply is characterized in the RWD as
follows:
Constituent Unit Primary Well Backun Well
pH std. 6.1 6.2
Specific Conductance µmhos/cm 915 576
Total Dissolved Solids mg/L 550 400
Calcium mg/L 82 55
Magnesium mg/L 34 21
Sodium mg/L 42 29
Potassium mg/L 2 2
Total Cations meq/L 8.8 5.8
Bicarbonate mg/L 300 250
Sulfate mg/L 31 23
Chloride mg/L 97 30
Nitrate as Nitrogen mg/L 9.5 5.7
Total Anions meq/L 9.0 5.8
30. The Discharger constructed three groundwater monitoring wells at the facility in May 2001. The
well locations are shown on Attachment B 1.
31. Based on monitoring events in June 2001, September 2001, April 2002, and July 2002 (the
Discharger failed to perform groundwater monitoring in the Fourth Quarter 2001) the water table
exists approximately 80 feet below the ground surface and groundwater flows toward the south
with minor variations of the flow direction to the southwest and southeast. Monitoring well MW-
1 is near the eastern boundary of the facility site, cross-gradient of the existing LTU. MW-2 is at
the upgradient edge of the LTU, and MW-3 is only slightly down-gradient from the LTU. The
data are summarized in the following table.
TDS NO3 as N EC Na Cl
Well Name Date vHH (mg/L) (mgU (µmhos/cm) (mg(L) (mg/L)
MW-1 June 2001 6.86 960 22 1,500 72 98
MW-1 Sept. 2001 6.92 1,000 30 1,600 NS NS
MW-1 March 2002 6.84 723 24.3 1,440 54 75
MW-1 April 2002 6.30 932 18.5 1,480 NS NS
MW-1 July 2002 6.41 1,212 18.6 1,720 NS NS
Average 6.67 965 22.7 1,548 63 86.5
V,m Joaquin Non]SS Oloie Pgcn Filcs Cr=k\W R.tl c
