CE//VFELOER
&right Ftople. s uluGcn&
An old windmill was previously abandoned . The Domestic Well has been in service since July
1 , 1998. For additional information regarding the change-over of the former domestic/irrigation
well to a back-up irrigation well , please refer to Section 5 ("Best Management Practices") of
this report. A new irrigation well was drilled near the northeast corner of the nursery. Also, a
former irrigation well located north of Potter Creek (newly acquired property) was abandoned .
The nursery employs a staff that seasonally ranges between 100 and 200 people .
2. 3 .2 Production
Approximately 450 acres are currently in production , of which approximately 60 percent are
trees , 25 percent are 5-gallon shrubs , 2 percent are 2-gallon shrubs , and 13 percent are 1 -
gallon shrubs .
The trees and almost all of the shrubs are drip-irrigated . The 1 -gallon shrubs are watered
using overhead "broadcast" sprinklers . Supplemental watering by hand is performed on all
types of plants as needed .
Meister°, a slow release polycoated fertilizer product by Helena Chemical , has been
incorporated into the soil mix since April 1999 . Prior to that time , Scotts Osmacote was
incorporated into the mix. Both products are reportedly stable, dispersing fertilizer over an
eight to nine month period . This particular product is one of Norman 's Nursery's Better
Management Practices (BMPs) . Even though it is substantially more expensive, it is another
example of the nursery's attempt to reduce excessive nitrogen releases to the water.
Fertilization is supplemented by injecting liquid fertilizers into the irrigation lines when required
during the growing season . The liquid fertilizers used are 8-8-8, Thiocal® with CAN 17
(Calcium Ammonium Nitrate solution ) . This is done to lower the nitrogen level so as to not
promote plant growth during the fall months. Commercially available pesticides and herbicides
are used under license .
2.4 GENERAL GEOLOGIC AND HYDROLOGIC SETTING
2.4 . 1 Topography
The attached Plate 1 was derived from the U . S . Geological Survey topographic map (Linden,
California , 7. 5-Minute , 1968) and shows that the elevation of Norman's Nursery is
approximately 125 feet above mean sea level (msl ) .
