V KLE/NFELDER
i Brigh I Peupl& Right!ttthdMn&
a floodplain for the Duck River, Calaveras River, and Potter Creek. The Sierra foothills lie to
the south of the nursery. Numerous drainages and intermittent streams are shown on the map
to be flowing out of the hills towards the property. One stream exits the hills to the southeast
of Norman's Nursery flowing northwest. Where the stream encounters the north-south
centerline of Section 8 , it bends towards the north where it later flows into Potter Creek. Based
on the shape of the primary topographic contour line near the word " Escalon" in Escalon
Bellota Road , it appears that a portion of the stream may also split into a drainage that flows
across the Norman's Nursery property offsite to the northwest. The nursery site has a
moderate topographic relief, sloping to the north and west.
Plate 2 is the base map for Norman's Nursery. The property was surveyed in February 1998
by Thompson-Hysell Engineers of Modesto, California. More recent expansion of the
nursery's operations has been added to the surveyed map.
2 .4 . 2 Regional Geology
The site lies within the eastern edge of the Great Valley Geomorphic Province of California .
The valley is approximately 400 miles long and averages about 50 miles wide, and comprises
about 20 , 000 square miles . The valley has been filled with a thick sequence of marine and
non-marine sediments from the late Jurassic to Holocene . The uppermost strata of the Great
Valley represent, for the most part, the alluvial , flood , and delta plains of two major rivers
(Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers) and their tributaries.
The valley deposits are derived from the Coast Ranges to the west and the Sierra Nevada to
the east. Granitic and metamorphic rocks outcrop along the eastern and southeastern flanks
of the valley. Marine sedimentary rocks outcrop along most of the western , southwestern,
southern, and southeastern flanks ; and volcanic rocks and deposits outcrop along the
northeastern flanks of the valley. The valley geomorphology includes dissected uplands, low
alluvial plains and fans, river flood plains and channels, and overflow lands and lake bottoms.
2.4. 3 Site Geology
According to the United States Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service "Soil
Survey of San Joaquin County, California" dated October 1990, the soil types in the area of
the nursery can be summarized as follows:
117226.E02/ST013R0176 Page 4 of 40 January 31 , 2013
Copyright 2013 Kleinfelder
