KLE/NFELOER
anym mak. AroM safuffo.
• The northern edge of the nursery is covered by San Joaquin sandy loam . The soil is
moderately deep to hardpan . The surface layer is a brown , sandy loam to a depth of
approximately 13 inches . The upper part of the subsoil is a claypan , approximately 7
inches thick. From the claypan to a depth of 5 feet is a brown and light brown
indurated hardpan . Permeability is very slow in the San Joaquin sandy loam unit.
Shrink-swell potential is high . The effective rooting depth is limited by the hardpan at a
depth of 20 to 40 inches . Water application should be light and frequent. The soil is
poorly suited for hardwood trees .
• Most of the nursery is covered by Rocklin fine sandy loam. This moderately well-
drained soil is moderately deep to a hardpan . Typically, the surface layer and upper
portion of the subsoil is a fine , sandy loam to a depth of approximately 25 inches . From
25 to 36 inches in depth is a sandy, clay loam. The lower part of the clay loam is an
approximate 4-inch thick hardpan . From 36 inches to 5 feet in depth is a dense,
weakly-cemented , sandy loam . Permeability is moderate in the Rocklin fine, sandy
loam unit. The effective rooting depth is limited by a hardpan at a depth of 20 to 40
inches. This soil is unsuited for hardwood trees .
• The southeast corner of the nursery is covered by Redding loam. This moderately well-
drained soil is moderately deep to a hardpan . The upper surface layer is a 6-inch thick
loam . A red loam extends from 6 to 27 inches in depth . Beneath the loam is a 3-inch
thick red clay. Beneath the red clay to a depth of 60 inches is a silica cemented
hardpan . In some areas, the surface layer is gravelly or cobbly. Permeability is very
slow and water capacity is low. This soil is unsuited for trees.
According to Sheet 1 of the State of California Division of Mines and Geology publication titled
"Geologic Map of the Sacramento Quadrangle , California 1 :250 , 000" dated 1981 , the
Norman's Nursery site is underlain by the lower member of the Modesto Formation ("QM2") ,
which is comprised of alluvium from the adjacent hills . Surrounding the site to the east and
south is the andesitic conglomerate, sandstone and breccia of the Mehrten Formation ("Tm").
117226 .E02/STO13R0176 Page 5 of 40 January 31 , 2013
Copyright 2013 Kleinfeider
