11
March 6,2001
Job Number: LG00-426 F
r `
Page 6
mentioned that a septic system operating under heavy use during canning season-may have some
impact on water quality.
If one takes into account that ground-water flow directions and gradients'fluctuate
seasonally;the high concentration of nitrate may originate relatively close to the on-site well.
One or more of the following nitrate sources may contribute to the high nitrate concentration
measured in.the on-site water well. 1)portion from the regional nitrate plume, 2) the on-site
septic system, 3) possible nitrates in the irrigation ditch water to the west of the.-subject site, or
possibly 4) from cannery operations because they are a large quantity disposer of waste water
and septic waste located close to the site.
VI. GEOLOGY, SOIL,AND PERCOLATION TEST
h
The geologic literature'indicates that the surficial deposits near the site are the Pleistocene
age (about 10,000 to 2-million years old) Modesto Formation(Plate 6). The Modesto Formation'
is generally composed of river alluvium, alluvial terraces, and'abandoned channel ridges.' The
Modesto Formation consists of tan and light-gray gravely sand, silt, and clay.' During our
investigation, the Modesto Formation consisted mostly of sandy silt, silty, sand, with occasional
minor sand layers. Clay soils were encountered at the surface.
The surface.soils'located at the proposed project location were identified as the Stockton
Clay by the San Joaquin Soil Survey report.'Table 3 presents some general engineering'
properties for the given soil.
' Marchland,D.E.,and Atwater,B.F., 1979,Preliminary Geol.ogic Map-Showing Quaternary Depostis of
the Lodi Quadrangle,California:U.S.Geologic Survey Open File Report 79-933.
