Groundwater
conditions may vary at the site in the future due to variations in rainfall, groundwater
withdrawal, construction activities, or other factors not apparent at the time our borings were
i drilled.
The above is a general summary of the soil and groundwater conditions encountered in the
exploratory borings drilled. More detailed descriptions of the soils encountered in the borings
are noted on the Logs of Borings. All soils have been classified according the Unified Soil
Classification System which is described on Plate A-2 of the appendix.
VII. LABORATORY TESTING
Laboratory tests were performed on selected samples obtained from the exploratory borings in
order to evaluate the moisture and gradation characteristics of the soils encountered. We
attempted to perform strength tests on the samples, but the samples were too disturbed for that
type of testing. The tests performed consisted of Moisture Content and percent passing No.
200 Sieve. In addition, one bulk sample was obtained for R-Value testing for pavement section
design calculations. The test results, with the exception of the R-Value, are noted on the Logs
of Borings at the corresponding sample locations. The R-Value test results are summarized on
j Plate A-7.
I VIII. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
( 1. Foundations
1 We recommend that the structures be supported on spread or continuous foundations bearing
on the existing soils or on Engineered Fill. We recommend that foundations extend a minimum
depth of 12 inches below the lowest adjacent finished soil subgrade, interior or exterior,
whichever controls. We anticipate that loose soils may be exposed at the bottom of portions
of the foundation excavations. In order to provide more uniform foundation support, we
recommend that the upper 12 to 18 inches of soil at the site be compacted prior to excavating
foundations. If any extremely loose or soft soil pockets are encountered, they should be
overexcavated and recompacted as described in the "Site Preparation and Grading" section of
this report.
With the above provisions, the recommended maximum allowable soil bearing pressure for the
structures bearing on the existing soils is 2,000 pounds per square foot (psf) for dead plus live
loads. If a higher bearing value is desired, foundations can be underlain by a minimum of 2
feet of compacted Engineered Fill beneath the bottom of the foundations. Engineered Fill
should extend at least 2 feet laterally beyond the foundations to help provide more-uniform
Copyright 1995 Klcin(elder, Inc. Page 3 or
