Technical Description
Oxygen is essential for the growth of nitrifiers, and alkalinity consumption is important because
nitrifying organisms are efficient only over a relatively narrow pH range. The third parameter,
biomass production, is important to the understanding of microbial population dynamics.
The low cell production frequently causes washout of nitrifiers in combined carbon-nitrogen oxi-
dation systems without high sludge age. The Nitro-Raptor batch process assures that washout is
less likely to occur than in a conventional flowthrough system or process due to the design of the
hydraulic control.
Compared to heterotrophic oxidation of carbonaceous waste material, nitrification generates rela-
tively little biomass. Therefore, additional solids capacity for nitrogenous processing beyond
those allocations given for the heterotrophic process is not required.
The Nitro-Raptor batch system removes an average 96.8%of nitrates.
(NOTE.•By increasing detention time from 14 to 16 hours,the process begins to run out the right
side of the growth curve. This additional detention time utilizes Oz demand for further conver-
sion of NH,to NO3.)
Samples of MLSS are pulled from the ML entering the clarifier.
Formula:
F:M = Influent BOD, lbs/dav (6)
Solids in aeration, lbs
Example: Calculate the F:M_
_ Assumptions:
Q=0.075 MGD
Aeration tank volume,V=0.050 MGD
BOD; = 125 mg/L
MLVSS = 1600 mg/L
F = Influent BOD 5
= (BODS)(Q,MGD) (8.34 lbslry
(125)(0.075)(8.34)
78.18 lbs/day
m = Solids inventory in aeration tank
= MLVDD mg/L)(V, MGD) (8.34 lbs/gal)
= (1600) (0.050) (8.34)
= 667.2 lbs
F:M = 78.18 BODJday
667.2 lbs MLVSS
= 0.11 lbs BODS/day/lb MLVSS
Extended aeration detention sizing:
Fxh = C
H1
where
- ts
7-H Technical Services Group,Inc.
