The Hollenbeck Pigeon Loft.
dba: Leland Inc.
Manure Management Plan.
General Information.
The Hollenbeck Pigeon Loft operates a 5,000 pairs of pigeon facility (1)at 2314
S.Hollenbeck Road, Stockton, CA. 95215.
The loft operates year-round.
The loft is a component of three rows of pens. Each pen has an outside fly-pen.
The loft is built to keep pigeons inside and intruders out. Instruders include mice,
rats, ..., smakes, sparrows, wild birds, and other animals found in the area.
Manure Management.
Pigeons are gentle and need a kind treatment, therefore, the clean up of the loft is
done by hand.
In front of each nest in the compartment must have a perch to keep the pigeon out
of the nest, all droppings will be on the floor and clean up twice a week.
Droppings will be stored in the manure house with a standart roof the lowest part
is 7ft high, a cement floor(2) and a brick wall 24 inches high. Above the wall is a type of
metal meshed web designed to prevent the intrusion of flies. However, in oder to have a
double protection against flies we may hang a kind of glue tapes inside of the manure
house to catch any of them who could get in by the door when workers used it.
Inside of the manure house is divided into compartments. The droppings mixing
with"greens" (leaves, grass, weeds ...) and"browns" (dry leaves, dry grass and used
straw from the nest) will allow oxygen flows freely. This kind of mixing which allows
oxygen flows freely, helps all materials decompose more quickly and odors are reduced
or even go away.
Depending on the weather, from few to several weeks, the droppings mixed with
the green and the browns will become organic compost and can be used as fertilizer in
the 3 acres of organic vegetable garden in front of the loft.
