Solid Waste (Refuse and Dead Animal) Management.
-Dumpster or dumpsters will be emptied weekly by Stockton Scavengers Assoc.
Inc.
-According to our experiences, if the loft is clean, and the pigeons are treated
kindly we did not have any dead bird in our former facilities, however, we do not know
anything yet about the condition of the air and the soil contaminated of many kinds of
substances that induce an allergic reaction in a particular animal, an incinerator is built in
front of the loft(3).
Feeding Operations.
Grains is stored in two silos in front of the loft. Because of the sensitivity of the
birds we could not use the automatic feeding system. Moreover, to have optimum
production,we have to change foods according to the weather and the health of the birds.
Vector Control.
This is a very difficult problem to be solved, because, with only about three acres
of loft in the middle of thousands and thousands of acres which do not have an effective
rodent control yet,how could we do it effectively. But we will follow and apply all
nececessary regulations to minimize rodent harborage(4).
Notes:
(1) —Our facility will raise pegeons for"food"not for"show", therefore, when we use
the term"pigeon", this tern means "pair". Pigeons mate for life and mated pairs
normally roost together. Each hen lays only two eggs each breeding season. The first
egg is usually laid in the evening between 5pm and 7pm. The second egg is laid
about 43 to 44 hours later, usually between 2pm and 3pm. After the second egg is
laid ,the brooding commences and at the end we will have a pair of squabs one male
and one female.
(2) -The concrete floor is about 4 inches thick. The concrete may not always water
£roof,to prevent the liquid manure leaking into the ground and the underground
water maybe contaminated, a layer of plastic (4mil) will be laid under the concrete
floor.
(3) - With our method of production the mortality of the bird may be avoided.
Following are factors that reduce natural resistance to desease and parasite
infestations:
- The loft will be as dry as possible.
- The loft will get plenty of fresh air but no wind or draft especially no abrupt
change of temperature. To keep the temperature of the loft almost constant
two layers of root dis[and from each other about 3",that allows the air flows
freely between them.
