PERSONAL SAFETY
SITE ENTRY PROCEDURES: Permission of project manager. The project manager will be
responsible for personnel on site having the proper training and being informed of potential
hazards anticipated at the site, and the recommended procedures/precautions for the site.
PERSONNEL PROTECTION:
Level of Protection: A B C D X
Employees will work at Level D until air monitoring indicates a need for a change.
Level D will consist of hard hats, steel toed boots, ear and eye protection and
normal work clothes.
Modifications: If necessary, tyvek suits will be used with NIOSH approved face
masks. All personnel collecting soil samples will wear gloves. Hard hat and steel
toed shoes will be worn at all times. All respirators must be NIOSH approved,
canister-equipped for organic vapors.
Surveillance Equipment and Monitoring Procedures: Air in and around the work
site will be monitored with a photoionzation detector (PID). This instrument will
serve as an indicator of hydrocarbon vapors. Initial surveying of the air will
commence prior to the drilling of the boreholes to monitor for airborne VOCs.
Additionally, the air will be monitored periodically around the drill rig during
drilling advancement. The following action levels and procedures will be taken
when the California Occupational Safety and Health Administrations (Cal OSHA)
permissible exposure limits (PELs) for volatile components of petroleum
constituents are approached.
Instrumentation Action Levels
PID No Cal OSHA exposure standard or Threshold Limit
Value has been established for diesel or kerosene.
The Cal OSHA PEL for gasoline (the most volatile of the
hydrocarbons) is 300 ppm. The site will be
monitored on a periodic basis to evaluate the
potential for worker exposure and the required personal
protection. The following procedures will be taken when
1/2 the PEL for gasoline is reached: All personnel
in the exclusion zone must wear half-face
respirator with organic vapor cartridges or leave the
work area until levels are reduced.
First Aid Equipment: Standard first aid kit, portable eye wash
First Aid Procedures:
Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting, summon medical help
Inhalation: Move victim to fresh air, seek medical attention if needed
Dermal Exposure: Remove contaminated clothing, Flush with water
