Class III soils have severe limitations that reduce the choice of plants or that require special
conservation practices, or both.
Class IV soils have very severe limitations that reduce the choice of plants or that require
special conservation practices, or both.
Most soils have two capability classes, one class for irrigated soils and another if non-
irrigated. The applicable capability class depends upon the availability of irrigation water at
the site.
The soils are further grouped by subclass and unit which define the limitations of the
Capability Classes.
The capability groupings listed in the Soil Survey of San Joaquin County. California for the soil
series on the subject property are listed below:
TABLE 2
Capability Groupings
Soil Type Class Subclass Unit
Capay irrigated II s 5
Capay non-irrigated IV s 5
El Solyo irrigated II s 3
EI Solyo non-irrigated IV s 3
Vernalis irrigated I
Vernalis non-irrigated IV c 1
Xerofluents non-irrigated VII w
Zacharias irrigated II s 4
Zacharias non-irrigated IV s 4
Subclass "w" indicates that water in or on the soil interfere with plant growth or cultivation; "s"
indicates the soil is limited primarily because it is shallow, droughty, or stony; and`b" indicates
that the chief limitation is climate which in this case is too dry if irrigation water is not available.
Unit 1 indicates limitations caused by a potential erosion hazard; unit 3 limitations are slow or
very slow permeability in the subsoil; unit 4 indicates low water holding capacity in sandy or
gravelly soils; unit 5 indicates limitations caused by fine textured or very fine textured surface
layer.
It should be noted that the Xerofluvents are listed as a Class VI soil in the U.S.D.A. survey
because of frequent flooding. The soils on this site are not frequently flooded thus the Capability
Class for the Xerofluents should be adjusted to Class IV. A Class IV rating is consistent with the
soil surveys in adjacent counties with infrequently flooded Xerofluvents.
The enclosed soil maps indicate the approximate boundaries of the soil types (see Appendix A).
The approximate acreage and percentages of the existing soil types in the area to be mined are in
Table 3.
7
