Mr. John Parks
Page 2
calculations were conducted to estimate an average range of treated nitrate levels of the property.
One estimation was conservative and another non conservative to estimate a range based on two
influent waste stream levels and denitrification factors.
I PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT
A new winery is being constructed on a rectangular shaped, 150 acre parcel located on the
west side of Jacob Brack Rd., approximately 2500 feet north of Turner Rd., Lodi, California. It is
proposed to dispose of the winery waste effluent, estimated at 10,000 gal/day,by spray irrigation to
on-site acreage. The results of our Soil Suitability/Nitrate Loading Study found that the nitrate levels
of the spray irrigation program will not negatively impact ground water because the treated effluent
contains very low levels (about rain water level) of nitrate.
The septic design will use a 3000 gallon septic tank with 400 gallon dosing tank. We
understand the bottom of the leaching trench will be located 5 feet above high ground water and the
bottom of the leach lines will be placed 34 inches (2.83 ft) above the ground surface. First ground
water was encountered at 26 inches(2.17 ft)by Condor Earth Technologies,Inc.'in their percolation
hole #1 at the proposed septic location on August 31, 1998. Neil Anderson & Associates found
ground water between 6 feet and 7 feet over different parts of the site on August 31, 1998.4 Most
likely, the depth to water table across site at that time was approximately 6 to 7 feet. Perched ground
water probably existed at shallower depths at some locations.
II NITRATE LOADING STUDY
In August 1998,Neil O. Anderson&Associates,Inc.4 sampled ground water on the site and
found that nitrates in the ground water averaged about 113 mg/l nitrate as NO3(25.5 mg/l as N).The
nitrate in ground water most likely originated from previous uses of the subject property and current
dairy farm activity located close by.
I
A build up of nitrates in the upper ground-water zones can cause a temporary blood disorder
in infants called methemoglobinemia (blue baby). Serious and occasionally fatal poisonings in
infants have occurred following the ingestion of water containing nitrate concentrations greater than
10 mg/l nitrate as N or 45 mg/I nitrate as NO3. The units of nitrate in used in the mass balance
equation are nitrate-N with a maximum drinking water contaminate level of 10 mg/1.
The nitrate loading analysis estimates the concentration of nitrate-N of the septic effluent
combined with rain water after denitrification before mixing with ground water. The method is
' Condor Earth Technologies, Inc., Sutter Homes Wine Processing Facility Percolation Test. Report dated
September 22, 1998,
a Neil O.Anderson&Associates,Inc., Letter Report:Nitrate Loading Study,letter dated September 4, 1998,
