` September 28, 2005
,NOA Project Number: E05116A
3.5 Current Off-Site Sources of Contamination
No above-or below-ground potential or known sources of contamination to the subject property were
identified from current uses of the surrounding properties, except for the following:
• Several of the surrounding properties are currently used for agriculture.
L • It is likely that all surrounding residences utilize wells and septic systems.
{ /4.0 EVALUATION OF IDENTIFIED CONTAMINATION SOURCES
` Though no evidence was found to indicate that agricultural chemicals were applied inappropriately to
Lthe subject property, the possibility exists that chemical residues may remain in on-site soils.
The above-ground storage tank and waste oil buckets present a threat of contamination to the subject
L property because neither is located within appropriate secondary containment In addition, the above-
ground storage tank is located too close to the domestic water well.
L /If water wells are not properly operated and maintained, they can serve as contamination conduits to
groundwater. Septic systems may be used for inappropriate disposal of hazardous substances. In this
case, other than the close proximity of the above-ground storage tank to the domestic well, there is no
L reason to suggest that wells or septic systems may be contaminant pathways on the subject property or
vicinity.
L Because no leaks were observed, the transformers are not considered to pose a threat to the subject
property at this time.
L '5.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Given the historical uses of agricultural chemicals and petroleum products on the subject property,
meaningful conclusions regarding the presence or extent of such material cannot be determined without
soil sampling and analysis. Such sampling and analysis is especially warranted in the conversion of
agricultural land to residential use,as is the case for this property.
LShould the current or future residents of the subject property be interested in determining the quality
of their drinking water,EHD should be contacted for direction regarding the potential for impacts to
Lgroundwater from the agricultural history of the property and vicinity.
If the above-ground storage tank is to remain on the subject property,it should be moved away from
Lthe domestic well and placed within appropriate secondary containment.
Should the property owners or the EHD be concerned about PCB contamination from the
Ltransformers,PG&E should be contacted to either test or replace them.
L 9 '0004
L
