Page 2
of the obnoxious odor we are treated to on a regular daily basis. On Sat-
urday, August 31, 1996 approximately 200 members and cruests were gathered in
our picnic area at 6:00 P.M. for a barbecue. Our regular dose of stench was
obviously very poorly received.
We understand our Supervisor, Robert Cabral, is planning to meet with our
people sometime this month. We would appreciate some answers to the follow-
ing questions:
1. If there is not something wrong with their system why do we not have the
same intensity of odor 24 hours a day?
2. Why do the dairy managers not acknowledge this odor? (They surely must
smell it. )
3. Would the odor be less if Mr. Douma used all fresh water for the cleaning?
(We asked Mr. Borges this question and his reply was that it would be awfully
expensive)
4. Would the odor be less intense if the holding ponds were moved to the far
North/West area of the property?
5. Would it be possible to contain and burn the methane gas (if it is methane)
as they did at the City of Oakland sewage treatment plant?
Our rural residential development was established in 1939 over 55 years ago.
We have 400 homes, 1000 residents and 550 registered voters. The County is
well aware of our existence. We are mostly retired citizens who bought homes
here to live out our lives in peace and safety. The Douma Dairy is destroy-
ing the value of our homes, our enjoyment of life and our little community.
We are appealing to you as our elected officials to help us resolve this
problem.
Yours truly,
Emma H. Sarvey
Representing the Board of Directors
San Joaquin River Club
