INFORMATION SHEET
ORDER NO. R5-2002-0225
ALPINE PACKING COMPANY, INC.
WASTEWATER TREATMENT FACILITY
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
Alpine Packing Company, Inc. (Alpine) prepares processed and raw meat products. Meat is
delivered to the facility for processing; animals are not killed at the site. Processed meat
products include sausages, hams, bologna, salami, pork products, and poultry products. Raw
products include beef, pork, and lamb (which includes chucks, brisket, ribs, loins, rounds, flanks,
etc.). The facility is located in Stockton with surface water drainage to the Sacramento San
Joaquin Delta. Water is provided by two on-site groundwater production wells.
Facility History
The facility has been operating since the 1940's. Until February 1999 animals were killed at the
site. With the elimination of the slaughterhouse, the wastewater generation rate deceased
substantially. Average wastewater generation rates with the operating slaughterhouse were
approximately 400,000 gallons per day(gpd); wastewater flow is approximately 30,000 gpd
without the slaughterhouse. The reduction of flow resulted in higher Total Dissolved Solids
(TDS) and pH concentrations in the wastewater. The change in wastewater quality is likely the
result of less dilution with low strength wastewater. Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN)
concentrations were reduced from approximately 100 mg/l to approximately 26 mg/1 when the
slaughterhouse was eliminated. This may be the result of less blood being discharged to the
wastewater system.
Wastewater Generation
The plant performs regular cleaning using several products, which include the following
chemical compounds: sodium hypochloritc, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, and sodium
dichloroisocyanurate. A site boiler provides hot water; the feed water for the boiler is softened
using a regenerative water softener. Regeneration brine is discharged to the wastewater system.
Operations are conducted year round, five days a week.
Wastewater is presently metered at the pumping station which discharges treated wastewater to
the land treatment unit. No information on the flow rate of wastewater from the facility to the
ponds is available. This Order requires installation of a flow meter to determine the wastewater
flow to the ponds.
The wastewater generated from the site activities is characterized by moderate concentrations
(approximately 26 mg/1) of organic nitrogen and high concentrations of dissolved solids
(approximately 1,300 mg/l of fixed dissolved solids).
Wastewater Treatment
Current average wastewater generation rate is approximately 30,000 gpd. The Discharger is not
anticipating an increase in the wastewater flow rate. Wastewater is discharged from the facility
