October 31,2003
NOA ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT NUMBER LE03-311
4.0 EVALUATION OF IDENTIFIED CONTAMINATION SOURCES
r. In a similar former dairy investigation performed by our office,Mr. Louis Pratt of the Regional Water
Quality Control Board recommended taking soil samples from potentially impacted locations on the
site to determine nitrate levels caused by Manure stockpiling(personal communication, September
9, 2003).
Because the subject property will be used in the future for agricultural and residential purposes, the
quality of groundwater obtained through on-site wells is a concern.
Unlined ponds such as those observed on the subject property present the potential for groundwater
degradation. Pesticide and herbicide use also have the potential to degrade water quality.
5.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Because cyanazine and MC A mime hylaminesalt have been identified as potential groundwater
contaminants, we recommend testing_ the on-site well for these and other common agricultural
chemicals. We also recommend testing for domestic water quality.
We recommend further investigation into the content, use, and former location of the three above-
ground st the sub' SLY. It is possible that some o t ese may have been
relocated from Van de Pol Enterprises in Ripon. As these tanks are removed from the site, we
recommend inspection for any soil stains or odors underneath them.
Further investigation into the use and content of the potential product dispenser tanks identified is
also warranted.
We recommend that soil samples be taken at varying depths from the centers of the former ponds and
manure storage areas. These samples should be tested for nitrate levels.
Investigation should be conducted into the location of the possible well near the northeastern corner
of the subject property. If this well is no longer in use, the determination should be made as to
whether it has been appropriately abandoned; if necessary, the well should be abandoned under the
oversight of the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department.
The owners of the transformers on- and off-site should be contacted to determine the PCB content
of the transformers. The PG&E contact for this discussion is Mr. Jim Jarvis, (209) 942-1566. If
necessary, the transformers should be removed or replaced.
13
l ;
