Available topsoil depths generally represent A horizon <br /> materials, those considered optimal for vegetation establishment <br /> and growth . The estimated average depth of this horizon is less <br /> than one foot . <br /> Insofar as the suitability of the project area soils for field <br /> crops is concerned, the land capability ratings indicate the <br /> existence of limitations which may make them unsuitable for <br /> cultivation . This is the case with class IV soils unless <br /> certain crops and/or careful management are utilized including <br /> intensive irrigation . As might be surmised from the capability <br /> ratings, none of these soils are prime agricultural soils . <br /> 4. 7 Land Use <br /> The current general land use within the project area , is <br /> agriculture, specifically an almond orchard . An almond harvest <br /> occurs on an annual basis on various portions of the project <br /> area not involved by mining . This use is compatible with the <br /> agricultural designation of the county ' s General Plan and the <br /> AG-40 zoning classification . <br /> In summary, a review of historic aerial photographs of the <br /> property indicates that it has been used as agricultural land at <br /> least since the early 1960s . <br /> With respect to mineral land classification, the project area <br /> contains a mineral resource zone - MRZ-2- according to the <br /> California Department of Conservation Division of Mines and <br /> Geology . <br /> 4. 8 Biota <br /> Landmark Lathrop Group, LLC <br /> - 6 - February 3, 2000 <br />
