The surfi ci al deposits of minerals are Holocene in age (0 to
11 , 000 years) and consist of undivided alluvial -flood plain
deposits of sand , silt , and clay . A contact exists on the site
between the Holocene deposits and older Pleistocene materials of
the Modesto Formation . This formation consists of fluvial
deposits of silt and sand , eolian deposits of loose sand , and
compact silt and very fine sand .
The site is listed in the Uniform Building Code as a seismic
zone 3, but seismic probability mapping indicates a very low
probability of significant earthquake activity . The Great Valley
Fault Zone is located about 13 miles west-southwest , and the
Foothills Fault System is located about 33 miles to the east-
northeast . Both faults are considered as inactive .
Exploratory borings encountered undifferentiated sands
containing varying quantities of silt and clay throughout the
proposed mining horizon of up to 48 feet .
4 . 6 Soils
Soils in the project area have formed from alluvial flooding,
and are rated as Class III if irrigated, and Class IV without
irrigation . These soils are marginal for farming . In the case
of class IV soils, careful crop management must be exercised for
_ successful farming. Recoverable topsoil depths range from
approximately two feet to four feet .
Soils identified by the Soil Survey of San Joaquin County (SCS
1992) include :
1 . Dello (#148) in the west 2/3 of the property . This soil
is rated as a Class IV without supplementary water , and as a
Class III with irrigation .
2 . Egbert (#153) in the southwest corner of the property .
This soil is rated as a Class IIW with irrigation and IVW
without supplementary water .
3 . Grangeville (#166) in the eastern 1/3 . This soil is
classified as IIW with irrigation .
Landmark Lathrop Group, LLC
- 5 - February 3, 2000
