RECLAMA 176N PLAN[Rev#21 —Bellino Pit
George Reed,Inc.
Page 2
I. DESCRIPTION OF ENVIRONMENTAL SETTING (continued)
D. Soil Assessment
Topsoil in its current state and after displacement is suitable for growing almond/walnut trees upon replacement.
Classification of the soil type is predominately Hanford Sandy loam and Hanford Fine Sandy loam with Storie
index ratings of 100 and 95 respectively.' The Hanford series consists of very deep, well-drained soils that
formed on moderately coarse textured alluvium dominantly from granite. The soils are well drained; negligible
to low runoff, moderately rapid permeability. Hanford soils are used for growing a wide range of fruits,
vegetables, and general farm crops. The soils are widely distributed in the San Joaquin Valley and in valleys of
central and southern California.'All topsoil is retained on site and used for reclamation of the project site.
E. VVe.etation/Wildlife
The project site has been farmed for over 50 years. There are no known rare, threatened, or endangered species
of wildlife on or near the site. Various bird species and rodents / varmints may frequent the site. Vegetation in
uncultivated areas is mainly annual grasses and associated herbaceous plants.
F. In-Stream Mining
In-stream mining is not applicable to the site/operation.
G. Air Resources/Climatology
Applicant / Operator are familiar with emission controls, primarily to manage fugitive dust emissions, PM10.
Water is used as a dust suppressant on internal haul roads and excavation area. Fugitive dust emissions within
the project area will be controlled by limiting the speed of vehicles to 15 mph and using water / dust palliative
materials for dust suppression. Water is spread by water truck as needed for dust suppression. Proper
maintenance of equipment and trucks used in the excavation process and for transporting of materials to the plant
site eliminates ozone precursor emissions. Any recommendations submitted by the San Joaquin Valley Unified
Air Pollution Control District during the CEQA review process will be incorporated into the operation.
Climate in the area is relatively mild. Rainfall averages 10 to 15 inches per year. The average low temperature
for the winter ranges from 37 to 41 degrees Fahrenheit, while summer high temperatures can average between 88
to 94 degrees Fahrenheit. Snowfall is not relevant to this region.°
H. Land Use
Project site is currently planted in Almond trees and will continue to be farmed until excavation commences in
each phase. Reclamation proceeds concurrently with the excavation process. Resident hybrid erosion control
seed mix will be utilized in excavated areas for erosion control prior to orchard planting, usually in 15f to 304:
acre increments.
z "Soils of San.16aquin County California", University of California-College of Agriculture,Agricultural Experiment Station Berkeley 4,
California(Pub), Walter W Weir(Author),June 1952
USDA-NRCS Soil Survey Division, Oficial Soil Series Description,Rev. 1011999-www.statlab.iastate.edulsoilslindex.html
Western Regional Climate Center, wrcc®dri.edu
