DATE: March 12, 2003
TO: San Joaquin County Planning Commission
FROM: From Larry Vrieling, So.Harrold Ave. (J21413) Farmer
RE: Proposed Quarry Excavation No.PA-02370- Negative
Environmental Effect
There will be many negative effects (traffic, air, health, noise, etc.) that will be dis-
cussed with you during your March 20th Public Hearing. One of the effects will be the
permanent distruction of prime farm land.
In a letter dated October 29, 2003 t those of us protesting the proposed project, its
coordinator" Ms. Carol Vie a, ed "the almond and walnut orchards, ... surround-
ing the existing plant is reclaimed land; excavated amd reclaimed back to fanning
capability. The nut production currently meets or exceeds the county average per
acre."
I think we know what really happens to prime farm land when its percolation and
drainage requirements are destroyed. At fust the trees will grow normally but by matu-
rity they will be stunted, if not dead from rot.
To demonstrate this permanent distruction, I submit the following photographs of
almond trees attempting to grow less than 60 feet north of the proposed quam, on land
excavated many years ago. Please note, the trees on the left growing on the proposed
site and on the land just beyond the earlier excavation. They are healthy trees, meeting
production standards for their age. The trees attempting to grow in the excavated area
are almost non-existant.
Need I say more? Thank you for your attention and thoughtfulness.
