The holding pond serves as both to recirculate flush water through the freestall barns and to store <br /> nutrient water for eventual irrigation. As flush water flushes the concrete alleys, the manure-laden <br /> water along with sand used for freestall bedding flows into a"sand trap"where the sand particles <br /> drop out of suspension for reuse as bedding. The manure solids and nutrient water continue on to <br /> the solids separation basin that is accepting the flow. As each separation basin becomes saturated <br /> with solids, the flush water is diverted to the next basin, while the full basin is allowed to dry out. <br /> Manure solids are then excavated and transported to the Manure Storage Pad (MSP). At the start <br /> of the winter months the basins are completely cleaned-out and the holding pond pumped down to <br /> create storage capacity. <br /> Storage Volumes for each containment structure, along with the tailwater and primary irrigation <br /> conveyance ditch are based on the following formula.
