w k'9 KLEINFELDER
Robert Mair with Owens-Illinois, the existing well on the subject property was originally going
to be used for domestic purposes. However, due to water quality issues, it was installed as a fire
_ well and has no domestic uses. No additional information was available to us at the time of this
writing. No other potential groundwater contamination issues in the project vicinity are known
to us at this time.
On June 15, 2004, a representative with our firm obtained a sample of groundwater from a valve
near the fire well located at the subject project. The sample was immediately placed in a chilled
cooler and stored in a refrigerator at our office. That same day, the water sample was submitted
to Sequoia Analytical for nitrate testing, using chain-of-custody procedures. Based on a permit
on file with SJCEHD, the 8-inch diameter fire well was installed in 1990 to a depth of about 385
feet below the existing ground surface. As of this writing, the results of our testing are not
available. These results will be reported when they become available.
-y 5. SOIL PROFILE
The subsurface conditions within the proposed septic tank/leach-field area were explored at
about 8:00 am on May 20, 2004, by drilling one boring to a depth of approximately 25 feet
below existing grade. The boring was drilled using a Simco 2400 truck-mounted drill rig
equipped with 4.5-inch O.D. solid-stem auger.
Based on our findings, the subsurface soils encountered consisted predominately of moderately-
plastic sandy clay to the maximum depth explored. Groundwater was not encountered in the
boring. Detailed descriptions of the subsurface conditions encountered during our field
investigation are presented on the attached Log of Boring.
The Soil Survey of San Joaquin County, California published by the U.S. Department of
Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service (1992) refers to the near-surface soils within the project
area as belonging to the Stomar and Capay soil series. These soils are described as having
"severe" percolation characteristics for septic tank absorption. Other attributes are given in the
table below:
Map Available Water Organic Content,
Symbol Soil Name Ca aci , Inches/Inch PH Percent
118 Capay 0.14-0.16 6.6-8.4 1-2
252 Stomar 0.15-0.18 6.6-8.4 <2
6. PERCOLATION TESTING
Two 6-inch diameter percolation holes were drilled adjacent to the existing leach field. The
approximate test locations and approximate dimensions from a reference point are presented on
the attached plate. As the location of the leach field is not visible at the site, our percolation test
sites were based on dimensions shown on the installation permit for the system dated November
44973.G01/ST04R872 June 23,2004
2004 Kleinfelder,Inc.
