May 4,2004
` NOA ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT NUMBER E04029A
appears that only the easternmost 140 acres of remaining land on the subject property were
planted with barley. This area was permitted for dicamba,di-syston, methomyl, thimet,MCPA
dimethylamine, 2,4-D amine, and paraquat.
In 2002, the crops were unchanged from their 2001 configuration. The garbanzo bean area was
permitted for aluminum phosphide, 2,4-D amine, and paraquat. The grape area was permitted
for captan dust, sevin, aluminum phosphide, 2,4-D amine, and paraquat. The barley area was
permitted for dicamba, di-syston, methomyl, thimet, MCPA dimethylamine, 2,4-D amine, and
paraquat.
In 2003, only the 25 acres of grapes were listed. This area was permitted for captan dust, sevin,
aluminum phosphide, 2,4-D amine, and paraquat.
No permits were listed for the subject property in the 2004 records.
The EXTOXNET web site of Oregon State University was consulted for information about
toxicity and persistence of the listed agricultural chemicals. Of all the chemicals permitted for
use on the subject property, five are Restricted Use Pesticides which have been assigned to
toxicity class I (highly toxic) by the EPA. These five pesticides are methomyl, paraquat,
aluminum phosphide, di-syston (disulfoton), and thimet (phorate).
According to the information consulted, methomyl residues are not expected to be found in
treated soil after the growing season in which it is applied. Aluminum phosphide will break
down spontaneously in the presence of water to form a gaseous product, so it is non-persistent
and non-mobile in the soil environment. Disulfoton has a low to moderate persistence in soils.
Phorate is of moderate persistence in the soil environment, with reported field half-lives of 2 to
173 days. Paraquat is highly persistent in the soil environment, with reported field half-lives of
greater than 1,000 days (EXTOXNET, 2004).
3.1.6 Water Supply and Sewage Disposal System
The EHD well and septic permit files were searched on April 9,2004 in an effort to obtain copies
of permits for any water wells or septic tanks on the subject property. The following permits
were found for the subject property and are included in Appendix F of this report:
8
