ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REQUIREMENTS—INCOMPLETE RWD
VAN RVITEN— TAYLOR WINERY
LODI, SAN JOA Q UIN CO UNTY
1) The characterization of the supply water, which the RWD stated would be performed in March
2002 should be complete. Please submit the analytical results. At a minimum, the process
supply water should be characterized for the following analytical parameters: nitrate, total
Kjeldahl nitrogen, total dissolved solids, and pH.
2) The RWD provided a list of chemicals used in the winemaking process. Please include the
amounts of the chemicals used, including all chemicals used in tank, bottle, or other cleaning.
The source of hot water used in the winery was not described in the RWD. Please provide
that description.
3) The description of the quality of the wastewater is inadequate. Because site-specific analytical
data may not be available, the RWD can use reference material to estimate the quality of the
wastewater. If needed, Regional Board staff can direct the Discharger's consultant to
monitoring data from similar wineries for use in the REVD.
4) The description of the surface impoundment and piping at the site is inadequate. On
5 November 2001 the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department observed winery
wastewater discharged through a six-inch diameter pipe that conveyed the wastewater
approximately 650 feet to a drainage ditch. The piping connections that allowed the illegal
discharge requires investigation. How will future discharges be prevented?
5) The RWD does not adequately evaluate the wastewater storage capacity and no water balance
was prepared. Allowing for two feet of freeboard, what is the approximate storage capacity of
the wastewater pond? Provide a water balance that evaluates the containment structures
ability to provide sufficient capacity on a month by month basis. Include monthly
evaporation, precipitation, and irrigation rates as well as monthly discharge volumes. Rainfall
shall be based on the 100-year return period total annual precipitation.
6) If land disposal of wastewater is contemplated, present loading rates for BOD (in
lbs/acre/day),total nitrogen(in lbs/acre/year), and salts (in lbs/acre/year). Provide a
description of the disposal area and the disposal technique. State the number of acres of land
used for disposal and crops planned for application areas (show locations of land on map).
Describe harvesting and crop disposal procedures. Describe the mixing ratio of wastewater
and supplemental irrigation water prior to application, and describe the tailwater control and
return system. (Note: Discharge of wastewater to fallow land is not an acceptable method of
disposal).
cV nlPYvu.Nu RwaT V Y.M1vP2 W uNP10'ldw
