_ Riechers Spence & Associates Job #: 21 02 049.0
Consulting Civil Engineers Date: 10/21 /02
Wastewater Treatment System Description, Design Criteria, Typical Winery
Wastewater Characteristics
Process Wastewater Treatment
The process wastewater from this facility will be treated in a three-cell return
activated sludge system. A schematic of the proposed process is shown in
_ Figure 1- Wastewater Management System Schematic.
Process wastewater is collected from the bulk wine storage, crush,
fermentation, and barrel storage areas. Where applicable, course screens
are installed in the floor drains. These screens are periodically cleaned and
the solids are removed and directed to the solids recovery facility. The pre-
screened liquid flows by gravity to the process wastewater pumping station.
A copasac screening unit is installed before the pump sump. The process
wastewater is measured recording how often and how long the pump was
activated. The pumped liquid is lifted to a parabolic screen mounted on top
of the equalization tank. Solids recovered in this screening facility are
removed and directed to the solids recovery facility. The parabolic screen
shall be constructed with slots no greater than 0.08 inches (2 mm).
Chemicals are added to the process water in the equalization tank to
control the pH (between 6.8 - 7.2) and to add nutrients as needed. The
screened effluent is pumped to the aeration tank.
By definition, the basic activated sludge treatment process consists of the
following three basic components: (1 ) a reactor in which the microorganisms
responsible for treatment are kept in suspension and aerated; (2) liquid-solids
separation, usually in a sedimentation tank or clarifier; and (3) a recycle
system for returning solids removed from the liquid-solids separation unit back
to the reactor. An important feature of the activated sludge process is the
formation of flocculent settleable solids that can be removed by gravity
settling in sedimentation tanks or other clarifiers.
The proposed reactor system consists of three cells in series. To assure
sufficient treatment throughout the year, the tanks must maintain a minimum
volume and depth.
11
