L
LDecember 5, 2005
NOA Project Number: E05118A
` northeast away from the subject property. No more work is being done on-site,but
investigations are still underway to the northeast of the site in the path of the groundwater
flow.
LWestern Farms Service (WFS),located at 35100 South Highway 33 which is less than a
quarter mile northeast of the subject property, has stored, blended, and distributed bulk
L liquid and dry fertilizers since 1969. Groundwater occurs at 30 feet below the surface and
contains nitrogen, fumigants and pesticides. Existing data and information about the site
show the presence of various chemicals, including nitrate, ammonium 1,2 dichloropropane,
L1,2,3-trichloropropane and diuron in groundwater resulting from WFS's past operation.'
Geosyntec Consultants received approval from the RWQCB in September of 2001 to
implement and monitor a pilot-scale field test for enhanced in-situ anaerobic bioremediation
of VOCs and nitrate detected in groundwater along with regular quarterly monitoring of the
existing wells on the site10.According to personal communication on December 2,2005 with
L Susan Skoe,Engineer for GeoSyntec Consultants", the pilot program has been very
successful and has brought nitrate levels in many of the monitoring wells from levels of
approximately 300 mg/L to non-detectable levels. She indicated that since they have started
L monitoring;no nitrate or VOC levels have increased. She stated that the recorded
contamination occurred before the Western Farm Service had modernized their facility, and
contamination will very likely continue to decrease.
LThe Underground Storage Tank Site Mitigation List, dated August 5,2005, and the LOP/Non-LOP Site
list, dated July 20,2004,were reviewed at the EHD on August 23,2005. No listed sites were found
within one-quarter mile of the subject property.
The UST Program Facility Inventory by Facility Name, dated April 11,2001,was also searched at the
EHD on August 23,2005 for the names of Thomsen and Reinstein. No records were found for the
subject property.
L
L
'CVRWQCB,R5-2003-0815;Monitoring and Reporting Program,Western Farm Service,Inc.,Vemalis
Facility,San Joaquin County.
f0 GeoSyntec Consultants,November 18,2004;Results of 2004 Semi-Annual(August)Groundwater
Monitoring,2004 Annual Report and Remediation Pilot Study Monitoring Western Farm Servic,Inc.Vernalis,California
Facility Monitoring and Reporting Program No.R5-2003-0815
Personal Communication,Susan Skoe,Engineer for GeoSyntec,December 2,2005.
L 6 .,44
L
