Soil and Water Sample Collection
Soil and water samples were collected and analyzed as described previously and attached in the
appendices. The following are the procedures in sampling of soil and water:
Soil Samples:
Materials Needed: Shovel, Rubber Hammer, Bucket, Zip Lock Bags to hold Samples, Soils Map
of the Area, Felt Tip Permanent Marker, Chain of Custody Forms, Ice Chest with Ice.
Procedure:
1. Identify locations from which samples will be taken. Take at least one sample from
each different type of soil as shown on the soils map.
2. First Sample: 1 ft. to 2 ft. deep. Use a tape measure to measure the depth of the
hole. Collect soil and place into a zip lock bag. Label the bag according to labeling
procedures(Below). Put bag into ice chest.
3. Second Sample: 3 ft. to 4 ft. deep. Use a tape measure to measure the depth of the
- hole. Collect soil and place into a zip lock bag. Label the bag according to labeling
procedures(Below). Put bag into ice chest.
4. Third Sample: 5 ft. to 6 ft. deep. Use a tape measure to measure the depth of the
hole. Collect soil and place into a zip lock bag. Label the bag according to labeling
procedures(Below). Put bag into ice chest.
Labeling:
1. Use a felt tip permanent marker to label the bags.
2. Label each bag immediately after sample is taken.
3. Label the bags according to the location number that it is taken from on that ranch.
The first location will be identified as site 1, and so on. (i.e. S1-2', S2-4', S3-
6'...etc., "S" represents"soil", "1" represents location number, and"-2"' represents
2 feet depth collected).
4. Label the bags with the date, time and depth of sample with a description of sample
location.
All soil samples collected for laboratory analysis were labeled and immediately placed into an ice chest
chilled to 4°Celsius. All sampling information was recorded on the Chain of Custody forms.
Water Sample:
Materials Needed: Water Sample Containers,Felt Tip Permanent Marker,Ball Point Pen, Labels
for Water Bottles. Chain of Custody Form, Ice Chest with Ice
Procedure:
1. Identify the location of wells that will be sampled and which types of tests will be
taken from each location.
2. Go to the site and turn on the well.
3. Allow the water to run for 3 to 5 minutes in order to purge the water that was in the
casing.
Labeling: Label each container that will be used for that location.
• Unpreserved Containers(No pill or powder)
1. Rinse the container with the water to be sampled, dump this rinse water.
2. Fill the sample container to as close to the brim as possible.
3. Close the lid and put the sample into the ice chest.
"Western Design/David Avila 2001 22
