Methods for Disposal of Agricultural Solids and Liquids
Crop land applications of liquid effluent:
Application of agricultural manure effluent in the form of liquids mixed with pumped irrigation water
must be applied with caution. The soil types of the area all have a slow permeability rate offering
susceptibility to runoff .
Dairy pond water from the irrigation pond should be tested for nitrogen content with a portable test
ldt to calculate the correct ratio of clear water to be pumped prior to each irrigation cycle. The irrigation
process is one of 24 hours a day, so an evaluation of the nutrient water needs to be evaluated periodically
as the lagoon levels drop to be sure that the nutrient content does not change substantially during the
processes. Adjust nutrient applications in relationship to the maturity of the crops
Crop land applications of solids effluent:
The soils at this site have moderate infiltration rates and a relatively low pH. (Refer to Appendix
IID for Infiltration test results from A & L Western Agricultural Laboratories and map). Good
agricultural practices dictate that solids effluent can be applied to this soil to build up its organic content
and moderate its pH.
The benefit from solids applied and incorporated into the soil via discing or plowing will increase
both the water holding capacity, tilth, percolation rate and the ability to contain nitrate nitrogen in the
anion enhance environment.
It is recommended that the solids to be applied to the cropland be composted to minimize the amount
of nitrogen applied to the fields due to an abundance of nitrogen available in the liquid form. Composting
of the manure solids will condition the solids prior to application to the farms. Composting converts an
organic waste material into a stable organic product by converting nitrogen from the unstable ammonia
form to a more stable organic form. The end result is a product that is safer to use than raw organic
material.
1.
