The test pit was exca-
vated within a recently constructed filter bed at the subject site in order to
observe the soil conditions within and beneath the bed. The test pit was exca-
vated to a depth of approximately 5-1/2 feet using a rubber-tired backhoe
equipped with a 24-inch bucket.
The soil conditions encountered in the test pit consisted of approximately
18 inches of mottled grey to brown very silty fine sand overlying approximately
2 feet of gravel to an approximate 2-inch diameter. Beneath the gravel, mottled
grey--tan very stiff to hard sandy clay was encountered extending .to the maximum
depth explored.
The gravel layer was completely filled with sewer water and the gravel and
+ sand soils caved in freely during excavation. The sewer water was perched on
top of the clay layer. We understand that the main groundwater table was
encountered at the site during recent drilling for light posts at a depth of
approximately 10 feet.
More detailed description of the soil and groundwater conditions encountered
are presented on the Log of Test Pit, Plate 11. All soils have been classified
according to the Unified Soil Classification System which is presented on Plate
L
In our opinion, the clay soils encountered beneath the gravel are relatively
impermeable. The sewer water is unable to .percolate into these soils at a rate
i fast enough to prevent horizontal migration of the water. As a result, the
water has been running out around the edges of the filter bed.
i
OiM[P OFFICES-
Fairfield
• Sacramento 0 Walnul Creek • i,esno 9 Merced Reno • Las Vegas 0 SI.
