At this time it is not known whether
or not the San Jo uin ocket mouse is resent on the project site. In the absence of survey
results confirming or negating the presence of San Joaquin pocket mouse on the project site; it
must be concluded that impacts to this species from the proposed project are potentially
significant. However, mitigation could be implemented that would reduce this impact to a level
considered less than significant.
14.16 Mitigation Measure 8 San Joaquin Pocket Mouse .
Implementation.of the following mitigation`should offset impacts to the San Joaquin packet
mouse to a level considered less than significant.
Because Granite will be required to mitigate for impacts to San Joaquin kit fox, and since
provision of a kit fox mitigation site would also mitigate any potential impacts to San Joaquin
pocket mouse, a trapping survey to determine the presence or absence of this species within the
project site should not be conducted. Rather, a preconstruction trapping and removal.effort
would be conducted in each excavation area to avoid`.`taking" San Joaquin pocket mouse. This
trapping removal effort should be completed no more than 30 days prior to mining in the current
excavation area(Area 1;2, 3, etc.). If this mouse species is captured, mitigation would include
removing trapped animals to nearby suitable habitats. In addition to trapping animals, one-way
eviction boxes should be placed over active burrows. This trapping and relocation effort should
be coordinated with USFWS and CDFG and should only be completed by a qualified wildlife
biologist. Trapping and removal of the San Joaquin pocket mouse and acquisition of mitigation
land would reduce impacts to less than significant.
14.17 Impact Number 9-American Badger
Implementation of the project as proposed could result in impacts to the American badger.
The American badger is a State species of special concern. It has no Federal status.
Approximately 137 acres of suitable American badger denning and foraging habitat would be
impacted by the project as proposed. Potential impacts to individual badgers during excavation
include: accidental entrapment in burrows and encounters with heavy equipment. Temporary
35
