WASTE DISCHARGE REQUIREMENTS _2_
SEBASTIANI VINEYARDS, INC.
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
6. Water for processing is derived from supply wells. There are two supply wells at
each of the facilities (four total). These wells range in depth from approximately
135 to 170 feet below ground surface (bgs). Depth to groundwater is between 13
and 20 feet bgs, based on completion logs. Water from the supply wells is used for
processing and domestic purposes.
7. Winery waste solids products, consisting of grape skins, stems, leaves and seeds, are
disposed of as agricultural wastes and are hauled off-site.
8. Prior to disposal, winery wastewaters are screened and adjusted for pH. Screening to
remove solids down to a particle size of 0.5 milllimeter is conducted using wedgewire type
screens. The acidic pH of the wastewater, resulting from the fermentation process, is
adjusted to a neutral pH using ammonia.
9. Wastewater disposal from both wineries is conducted at the TRV West facility.
Production wastewater from the TRV East facility is collected in a sump at the
northwestern corner of the site and is pumped to TRV West through a pipeline along
the southern edge of Turner Road.
10. Since expansion, discharges from the two facilities have increased to approximately
160,000 to 170,000 gallons per day (gpd), corresponding to an annual crush rate of
approximately 30,000 tons. Flows are anticipated to increase to a maximum of
650,000 gpd (annual crush rate of approximately 100,000 tons). Maximum flows
generally occur from August to October during the grape crushing season.
11. Wastewater treatment is conducted using an Advanced Integrated Pond System
(AIPS) and constructed wetlands, which cover 42 acres at the TRV West facility.
The AIPS consists of four anerobic/aerobic ponds, operated in parallel, for primary
and secondary treatment. •Each pond is approximately 365 by 190 by 12 feet in
depth, covering an area of approximately 7 acres. The AIPS were constructed with
1 foot compacted clay liners and have rip rap along the side wall to prevent erosion.
There are four cells in each ALPS. Two of the cells serve as a primary digester. The
central cell provides deep aerobic treatment and the fourth cell serves as a clarifier.
12. Wastes are injected into the deep anerobic zone which is covered by a 4 foot layer of
oxygenated water, aerated using three aspirating and two conventional aerators in
each pond. Biological solids generated during aerobic treatment settle and
decompose in the anerobic zone. Accumulation of digested solids in the AIDS
ponds may need removal every 10 to 20 years.
