4. The total number of parking spaces will be 332,which gives a high estimate for the number of
Parishioners and of
who may be on-site at any given time of the day. A reduction to 90%of
all available parking stalls will be used in the calculations.
The criteria referenced above will be used to formulate an"average daily flow" (ADF) from the
Multipurpose Building:
T 10 gallons x 800 searing capacity= 8,000 gpd.
Effluent total volume averaged equally over entire week= 8,000_7 days per week= 1,143 gpd
® 15 toilets x 150 gallons per toilet per day=2,250 gpd
® 4 flushes/hr/toilet x 15 toilets x 8 hrs/day=480 flushes/day x 1.5 gals/flush=720 gpd
® 332 parking stalls x 10 gals assigned to one vehicle with an indeterminate number of people in each
vehicle parked in 90%of all available stalls=3,320 x 90% =2,988 gallons per da
Average= 1,143 +2,250+720+2,988 =7,101 -4(From the four criteria referenced above) =1,775 gpd AD
COMMERCIAL WASTEWATER CHARACTERISTICS
Found on Pages 15 and 16 of the Primary Report, is a discussion of the wastewater characteristics
determined from the sampling of septic tanks from three different Churches within San Joaquin
County. Additional information and data will be discussed in this Section.
Primary wastewater constituents-of-concern found in septic tank effluent have influence over two
important factors in the operation of an on-site wastewater disposal system: Soil effluent acceptance
rates and nitrate-nitrogen impact. The Biochemical Oxygen Demand(BOD)test is the most /
common test used in wastewater analysis. BOD is the amount of oxygen, expressed as mg/L or
ppm, that bacteria take from water when they oxidize organic matter. Adsorption and volatilization,
followed by microbial degradation are the primary processes for removal of soluble organics.
Total Suspended Solids (TSS) is the material retained on a standard glass-fiber filter disk.
Suspended solids can be categorized as volatile or fixed suspended solids. TSS can create and
enhance the biomat formation between the soil and effluent interface, thus restricting infiltration.
The biomat, also referred to as a"clogging mat,"is a biological, slimy substance which forms on
the soil-effluent interface over time. This mat is composed mostly of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria
and bacterial products consisting of polyuronides and polysaccharides. The biomat does have one
beneficial property, and that is removing approximately 10% of the nitrogen from effluent disposal
systems. However, this 10%nitrogen removal figure will not be used in the nitrate loading
calculations to reduce the calculated nitrate loading.
Total Nitrogen is the summation of ammonia-nitrogen(NHj and organic nitrogen(proteins, amino
acids, enzymes). Since the septic tank is predominately anaerobic, nitrogen cannot exist in its
oxidized state as nitrate for any length of time in the septic tank effluent, and if it does, it is quickly
reduced to NO or NO.. If nitrate existed in septic tank effluent, this would also be added to
ammonium and organic nitrogen to arrive at Total Nitrogen.
Page -10-
Chesney Consulting
