In <br /> the planning process, consideration must be given to: <br /> • poultry manure characteristics <br /> handling systems from barn to storage <br /> • protection of the environment <br /> • a.manure utilization plan <br /> Poultry' Manure Characteristids <br /> 1. Freshly,produced poultry manure does not give off offensive odour. <br /> 2. The odour produced by stored manure increases as the moisture content increases. Liquid poultry <br /> manure can produce very offensive odours while dry manure usually causes no odour problems. <br /> The least odour results from drying the manure soon after it is produced. <br /> 4 3. As produced, poultry manure is about 75% moisture and weighs about 62 lbs per cu. ft. The <br /> moisture content depends on such factors as salt in the diet, bacteria in the water supply,flock <br /> health,-and pen temperature. <br /> 4. If poultry manure is to be handlediand stored as liquid manure, it must be diluted with an equal <br /> quantity of water. <br /> 5.
