PoLlltry Manure Handling rage 01 '
freshly produced manure, except that very dry manure will shrink 25%in volume due to
compaction during handling.
6. Poultry litter is usually 15 to 30% moisture. In this range it is crumbly and doesn't stick together.
Below 15% moisture it is dusty, and above 30%moisture it becomes sticky and slippery. In the 15
to 30%range, it weighs about 20 lbs. per cu. ft.
7. Solid manure that is stored in place under slatted floors, wire floors or cages will adjust to 65%
moisture. Drying with circulating fans can reduce this to 50%. Similarly, new cage systems that
have air circulation for positive manure drying on the belts can reduce moisture levels to 40 or
50%.
Volume of Poultry Manure Production
There are several methods available to estimate or calculate poultry manure production. One of the best
methods is to measure the rate of production from your operation. This may not be possible if the storage
design is needed before production begins. You can estimate the volume of manure production from the
quantity of feed to be fed in a given period of time. Multiply the tonnes of feed fed by 80 to get cubic feet
of liquid manure and by 40 to get cubic feet of dry manure produced.
Poultry manure storage volumes are listed in . The volumes are given for the housing periods
listed for the usual duration of a flock. If you are constructing the storage for a longer or shorter period,
multiply the storage volume by the number of flocks cycles or fraction of cycles during the storage period.
Table 1.
