High rise housing.
2. Conventional housing with gutters.
3. Conventional housing with manure belts.
High rise housing provides long-term storage for dry manure in the storey below the birds. No mechanical
equip-ment is needed to transfer manure to storage unless cable dropping board scrapers are used.
Manure is air-dried in storage. This usually requires fans in the storage to circulate the air over the
manure. As the manure is dried it cones up, increasing the surface area and the drying effect. Since it is
very important that the manure dries and the cones form, water leaks must be continuously monitored and
a fly control program must be followed.
To prevent ground water seepage, the storage should be completely above the original grade, and the
footings pro-tected by fill.A concrete floor is required.
Manure can be removed at any time or left for a year or more. No additional storage is needed. if
problems arise however, such as a minor flood or fly breeding, it may be necessary to do an unscheduled
cleanout.A large operation should have a curbed pad and runoff storage or a liquid manure storage for
such an event.
The problems in unloading a high rise house are usually related to the large volume of manure to be
removed and the long travel distance in the house to retrieve each bucket load_An appropriate travel
distance is 130 ft.A house that is 400 ft. in length should have end doors and one side door. There should
be a 16 ft, span in the rows of posts to allow the tractor and loader to turn easily to the right or left oppo-
site the side door.
Conventional Housing With Gutters
If cages are sus-pended, a special tractor scraper can be used that will allow manure to be stored in the
barn for one to 12 weeks. Otherwise, cable pit scrapers are used and the manure is delivered to the
centre or to one end of the barn.
A cross auger is used to transfer manure to storage. This equipment is designed to complete the manure
collection by receiving the manure from the end or centre of each row, conveying it to the side of the
house and elevating it to spreader or truck height.
A liquid manure storage tank is typically constructed so that the cross auger will empty into it_ In cases
http://www.gov.on.ca/omafra/engli sh/l ivestock/poultry/facts/93-013.htm 11/14/03
