Ms. Nancy Bishop - 2 -
✓ 10 October 2003
treatments under anoxic conditions, the microcosms should then be exposed to oxygen for some time
period to evaluate.:if.some combination of anoxic/oxic conditions would further facilitate degradation of
the ammonium and nitrate.
Along with the microcosm study evaluation report, WFS should submit a revised Cleanup Plan for soil
beneath the tank farm. If the HRC Primer or molasses treatment proves successful in the microcosm
study, the Cleanup Plan should include a monitoring schedule for MW-3, which is immediately
downgradient of the former tank farm. The monitored constituents should include amendments,
breakdown products and reaction byproducts. The Cleanup Plan should also describe a soil sampling
strategy, including the number of samples, sampte depths, and number of subsamples, if composite
samples are to be considered.
We appreciate your actions to identify a suitable treatment for ammonium in soil in advance of
proposing an insitu remedy. The RAP states that the nl' icrocosm study could take three months to
complete. Since the micrcosm could take longer, depending upon whether an aerobic phase is required,
please submit a microcosm evaluation report by 30 January 2004,which is about four months from
now. We look forward to reviewing the results.
