Kennedy/Jenks Consultants
PRIVILEGED & CONFIDENTIAL
5.0 CONCLUSIONS
The data collected as part of this soil gas survey verified the presence of PCE and other
HVOCs in soil gas samples collected from the Site. The elevated concentrations of PCE
detected in the soil gas samples are not unexpected given the findings of previous
investigations conducted in the vicinity of the Beckman Building. The presence of an area
with high PCE concentrations in shallow soil and soil gas samples immediately south and
adjacent to the Beckman Building may be attributable to a localized surface release of
PCE. However, because of the elevated concentrations of PCE throughout the area, the
data collected with this soil gas survey can not conclusively substantiate or invalidate local
oral history identifying the Beckman Building as a source of PCE to soil (and groundwater)
in the area.
To substantiate the findings of this investigation and to further define the possibility of a
surface release of PCE to soils immediately south of the Beckman Building,
Kennedy/Jenks recommends conducting an additional soil gas survey in this area. The soil
gas survey should be conducted on a tight grid pattern (approximately 5 feet on center)
with soil gas samples collected at frequent intervals bgs (such as 1 foot, 2.5 foot, 5 foot,
7.5 foot, 10 foot, continue with 5 foot intervals to groundwater). Confirmatory bulk soil
samples should be collected for laboratory analysis as part of this additional soil gas
survey. Permits for this additional soil gas survey would need to be obtained from
SJCEHD.
_.3:W AM o 952704.01
6;yoo ki495952704.01Uoa-MCd«
