M&P INVESTMENTS' PILOT TEST TREATMENT SYSTEM CONSTRUCTION AND TESTING
The purpose of the pilot test is to evaluate the effectiveness of removing VOC contamination from
soil and groundwater using a combination of soil vapor extraction and groundwater air sparging.
The pilot test involves the construction and testing of three pilot test treatment systems in the area
shown in Figure 1. The construction activities will include pilot test well installations (soil vapor
extraction and groundwater air sparging), temporary trenching and test equipment installations
(blowers, air compressors, and granular activated carbon canisters). Construction is scheduled to
begin in late December 2004 to early January 2005. Construction and pilot testing should take
approximately four (4) months to complete.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
A draft Public Participation Plan (PPP) has been prepared by EZC and is included in the draft RI/FS
Work Plan. The PPP identifies opportunities for public involvement throughout the pilot testing,
design and remediation process. Project documents, including the Pilot Test Work Plan, are
available for public review at the document repository at the Lodi Public Library, 201 West Locust
Street in Lodi.
GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Groundwater: Underground water that fills pores between particles of soil, sand, and gravel or
openings in rocks to the point of saturation.
Groundwater Air Sparging: Groundwater remediation method that involves injection of air below
the water table to volatilize contaminants in the water. The method is typically used in conjunction
with soil vapor extraction to capture vapors liberated from groundwater.
Perchloroethylene (PCE): A volatile organic compound historically used as a solvent for dry
cleaning and other purposes.
Pilot Test: A field-scale test of one or more remedial technologies to evaluate their effectiveness in
cleanup of subsurface contamination. Data generated during pilot testing are typically used to design
the full-scale remediation system.
Remedial Investigation and Feasibility Study (RI/FS): A process in which the extent and nature of
contamination is evaluated to determine viable remedial alternatives and assess the alternatives'
relative cost, effectiveness, and implementabil ity.
Soil Vapor: Vapor, present in void spaces in soil between the groundwater and the surface of the
ground, which may contain chemicals.
Soil Vapor Extraction: Soil remediation method consisting of extracting soil vapor from the
unsaturated zone above the water table. The vapors are typically captured using a well and piping
network and routed to a treatment system before emission to the atmosphere.
2
