• September 5.2001 <br /> 1.0 INTRODUCTION <br /> This Remedial Investigation Feasibility Study (RIFS) Workplan (Workplan) has been prepared to <br /> perform initial site investigation at the former Busy Bee Cleaners (Site), 40 N. Main Street, Lodi, <br /> California. Based the results of this initial investigation, additional investigation and/or <br /> remediation may be required at the Site. As proposed, this RIFS will occur in several phases of <br /> work as follows: <br /> • Phase 1 — Initial investigation to assess if a problem, such as soil and/or groundwater <br /> contamination exists; <br /> • Phase 2 — If a problem is found in Phase I, Phase II consists of defining the extent of the <br /> problem, or contamination, in two directions, vertically and areally; in addition, the <br /> magnitude of the contamination concentration-wise, both vertically and areally, is also <br /> defined; <br /> • Phase 3 — Once Phase II is complete and the full extent and chemical magnitude of the <br /> contamination has been defined, then remedial alternatives can be identified and <br /> evaluated based on the type, extent and chemical magnitude of the contamination. <br /> Remedial alternatives that are deemed feasible are then selected and evaluated using a <br /> suitability/cost matrix. The eventual selection of the recommended remedial technology <br /> will be the final product of this work. <br /> 1.1 Phase 1 Purpose <br /> The investigation described in this workplan has the following objectives: <br /> • Assess existing soil conditions at the Site and property adjacent to the Site (with owner's <br /> written permission); <br /> • Assess groundwater conditions beneath the Site; <br /> • Recommend appropriate further action for the Phase II portion of the RIFS, if warranted. <br /> 1.2 Scope of Work <br /> • The scope of services described in this Workplan include: <br /> • Locate underground utilities using Client's as-built drawings (if available) as well as <br /> Underground Service Alert (U.S.A.); <br /> • Obtain necessary permits and/or regulatory approvals; <br /> • Advance five (5) drilled soil borings and one (1) hand-auger boring at the locations <br /> shown on Figure 1; Note: the drilled borings will be advanced to groundwater whereas <br /> the hand-auger boring will be advanced to approximately 20 feet bgs; <br /> • Collect soil samples at 5-foot intervals beginning at five feet below ground surface (bgs) <br /> and continuing until total depth. The samples will be collected using brass or stainless <br /> steel sleeves; <br /> • Field screen samples for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using a hydrogen flame- <br /> ionizing detector (FID); <br /> • Secure soil samples in sleeves sealed with Teflon, end caps and tape. The sealed <br /> tubes will be placed in a cooler at 40 centigrade and transported to a DHS certified <br /> laboratory under Chain-of-Custody procedures.
