Soil Suitability Study MS-98-37 Parcel Nos . 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , & 5
was constructed for the six ( 6 ) permits studied.
Existing Use: Parcel Nos . 3 and 4 , forty (40) acres each, are the
only developed parcels . Parcel No . 3 ' s development consists of an
uninhabited house , a well , two (2 ) barns and three (3) sheds .
Parcel No . 3 also serves as storage area for several cable cars and
several automobiles . Parcel No . 4 has an inhabited house , a well ,
and a shop, and a septic system situate at the southwest corner of
the house . A portion of Parcel No . 4 is devoted to the grazing of
horses . Parcel Nos . 1 and 5 , totaling 200 acres is devoted to the
growing of grapes . Parcel No . 2 , totaling 40 acres as well as a
portion of Parcel 3 is devoted to the grazing of cattle.
Soil Profile Test and Percolation Test Hole Drilling : A total of
seven deep percolation test holes were drilled on the subject
property but I have listed only three on my "Field Percolation Data
Sheets" for soil profile reporting purposes . The locations of the
seven deep percolation test holes are shown on the attached "Site
Pians" . The seven deep percolation test holes are identified as
Test Hole Nos . DP1A, DP2A, DP3A, DP3B, DP4A, DP413 and DP5A and were
drilled to maximum depths of 12 ' 06" , 17 ' 06" , 19 ' 00" , 12 ' 07" ,
25 ' 00" , 22 ' 02" and 22 ' 02" , respectively. . Deep Percolation Test
Hole No . DPIA is located on Parcel No . 1 . Deep Percolation Test
Hole No . DP2A is located on Parcel 2 . Deep Percolation Test Hole
Nos . DP3A and DP3B are located on Parcel No . 3 . Deep Percolation
Test Hole Nos . DP4A and DP4B are located on Parcel No . 4 and Deep
Percolation Test Hole No . DP5A is located on Parcel No . 5 . The soil
encountered in all of the holes is noted to be reddish-brown in
color and either silty-sand loam or clayey loam, except for the
last foot of Deep Percolation Test Hole No . DP2A which is noted to
be black sand which appeared very similar to the black sand that
gold is found in the Mother Lode . Also the last foot in Deep
Percolation Test Hole No . DP3B is noted to be gravely with some
cobbles . Deep Percolation Test Hole No . DP3A was drilled to a depth
of about nineteen ( 19) feet at which depth the drill rig could not
penetrate the soil any deeper and there was no visual evidence of
a porous layer situate anywhere in the nineteen ( 19) feet depth.
Also there was no visual evidence of a porous layer in the twenty-
five ( 25) feet depth drilled for Deep Percolation Test Hole No .
DP4A so percolation testing on both Deep Percolation Test Hole Nos .
DP3A and DP4A was aborted.
Deep drilling operations were attempted on Parcel No . 2 on
December 2 , 1998 but the drill rig mired down in the soil made
unstable due to recent intermittent rain storms and Parcel No . 2
could not be accessed. After getting the drill rig removed from its
stuck position, an attempt was made to drill a test hole on Parcel
No . 3 but a malfunction in the drill rig equipment resulted in no
successful drilling on Parcel No . 3 either . Deep Percolation Test
Hole Nos . DP2A, DP3A and DP4A were drilled on Saturday, December 5 ,
1998 in spite of the drill rig getting stuck on this day too . Deep
R.E.
