Mary Meays, RENS `/ March 19, 1993
Field Notes 1320 W WEBER
Severe contamination observed. Obvious staining and heavy odor. Getting ready to sample the excavated
soil which has been removed Seep water has sheen.
X-18 taken from area of obvious contamination in order to quantitate the concentration of contaminants.
X-18 collected at approximately 10 feet just north of the sewer line. Sample collected at 9:10 a.m.
Soil pile sample collection 9:43 a.m. SP4 collected at north-west comer. Dug down approximately one
foot and then the soil was collected. SP-3 collected at approximately 16 feet south of SP-4. Dug down
two feet and sampled collected using a rubber sampling hammer. No odor observed in either SP-4 or SP-
3. SP-2 collected 20 feet south of SP-3. Sample collected at 9:48 a.m. No odor observed. SP-1 collected
at the south-west edge of the soil pile,20 feet south of SP-2. No odor observed. Sample collected at 9-.50
a.m.
Excavation is to the fence line at this point. There is some discussion as to what to do neat, how to plan
for the excavation. Discussed contacting the City of Stockton if the road area would be impacted. Also
the neighbor to the west has some truck traffic that should be notified of the problem. Very heavy odor
and heavy sheen. Mucky odorous material floating on the top of the water. It was decided to wait until
Monday to excavate into the street. Earthen berm of clean fill is placed across the northern end of the
excavation where contamination is present to help retain the floating gasoline product in that area. Some
water contamination has entered in the hole pit area, but it is thought that a series of two pump events at
the completion of the excavation should mitigate any problems caused by the seep water which is
contaminated Possible pumping of the southern part of the excavation may occur.
Water samples where collected for analysis of the seep water for characterization for disposal at Refinery
Services. Water collected a approximately 11:15 a.m.
Charlie Steinmetz with Gomes Excavating.
Contaminated soil which was removed on March 19, 1993 was placed on Visqueen plastic 40 feet east of
the south-west boundary of the soil pile. The second row of soil samples will be collected. SP-5, 20 feet
from the southern boundary of the soil pile. The row is 40 feet east of the south-west boundary. SP-5
collected 20 feet north of the southern boundary. SP-6,40 feet north of SP-5 and SP-7, 40 feet north of
SP-6.
SP-7, collected. Dug down approximately two feet and the sample is collected from the soil pile. No odor
observed although there was some discoloration in the area. The next row of samples, SPA SP-9, SP-10,
and SP-11 will be collected 80 feet from the south-west corner. Samples will be collected at 40 feet
interval. Time is 11:44 a.m.
SP-10 collected from the northern end of the third row at approximately 11:48 a.m.
SP-9 and SP-10 no odor observed. SP-11,SP-12, SP-13 the row collected 120 feet from the south-west
corner and at 40 foot intervals.
