State of Celifornia • Department of Health Services
iJle,morandum
To Anthony J. Landis
Chief, Site Mitigation Unit Da}e NOV 20 1985
Subject:
Lika Corp.-
Sampling Plan for
Field Ave. Facility
From Marg Rouch
Waste Management Engineer
On October 21, 1985, we received a Sampling Plan for Lika
Corporation' s Field Avenue facility. After having reviewed the
plan, the following are my comments:
o Lika Corporation needs to provide a list of all chemicals
and materials used in the printed circuit manufacturing
process at the Field Avenue site. Also, they should provide
a list of all chemicals and materials which might have gone
into the sumps.
o It is not clear what kind of power auger will be used for
the deep soil borings, which will be made into monitoring
wells. A hollow stem auger would be the preferred drilling
method.
o All samples should be analyzed for chlorinated organics as
well as heavy metals and pH.
o The soil samples collected, while drilling the monitoring
wells, should be analyzed for contaminants by the
laboratory, as well as examined by a geologist for
statigraphic control.
o A second phase must be considered for soil sampling in and
around the annex. If the initial samples show
contamination, more samples will need to be taken in a
vertical and horizontal direction to define the extent of
contamination.
o The plan calls for 2-inch I.D. casing, case slotting of
0. 028 inches, and sieved Lonestar N0.3 sand. The Department
of Health Services ' document, "The California Site
Mitigation Decision Tree" , states that a 4-inch I.D. casing
is the recommended minimum size casing for groundwater
monitoring wells. The slot size of the casing and the
filter pack material should be determined based on a sieve
analysis of the sediments in the zone to be screened. The
engineered
