' k4 KLEINFELDER
2 BACKGROUND
A former gasoline service station (Disco site) was located on the southern portion of the Del
Monte property, west of the former carwash facility. The site was operated as a service station
until the property was purchased by Del Monte in 1976. Del Monte never operated the service
station. The service station was demolished in the late 1980's or early 1990's.
Three 10,000 gallon underground storage tanks (USTs) were identified on the Disco site. The
USTs were removed in 1985. During the removal of the USTs impacts to soil beneath the tanks
was noted. The soil was excavated and aerated on the site and backfilled into the excavation. In
1991, a soil and groundwater investigation began. That investigation included a soil gas survey,
seven soil borings, and installation of eight monitoring wells. The results showed concentrations
of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon as gasoline (TPH-g) in the soil at depths ranging from 55 feet
below the ground surface (bgs) to 75 feet bgs, and also in the groundwater. The main
contaminants are TPH-g, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and 1,2-DCA. The site is
currently being monitored on a quarterly basis.
During a recent Kleinfelder Phase I Environmental Site Assessment, a car wash facility
associated with the former service station was noted on a Del Monte Site Plan dated November
1976 and a Caltrans Parcel Map dated March 1989. A boiler room was depicted on the 1976 site
plan, and it is unknown if there were any USTs associated with the facility. A geophysical
investigation is underway to investigate the potential for USTs.
Currently, two monitoring wells (MW-3 and MW-9) installed to monitor groundwater associated
with the Disco site are located upgradient and downgradient of the former car wash facility.
Analytical data collected from those wells suggest that petroleum hydrocarbons are not present in
the groundwater at those points.
The purpose of the proposed work is to address potential environmental concerns related to the
former car wash on the Disco Site. As stated earlier, Kleinfelder and Del Monte Foods will be
requesting comments from EHD following this proposed investigation.
12255.CW1 /ST02R980 Page 2 of 11
Copyright 2002,Kleinfelder,Inc.
