SECTION 3 SUMMARY OF FIELD METHODOLOGY
1.125-inch diameter by 6-inch long stainless steel soil sample tubes. The hollow sampler is
advanced 12 inches, filling the sample tubes with soil. The sample tool is then retrieved. Soil
samples were prepared for the laboratory by covering each end of the tubes with a Teflon
sheet and polyethylene cap. The samples were labeled, placed in ziplock bags, and placed in
an ice-filled cooler. Soil samples were only collected from borings installed within the
source area (CPT-1 through 5). Five vadose zone soil samples were collected between 30
and 31 feet bgs,and five soil samples were collected at various depths beneath the water
table.
Soil samples were analyzed for TPH-gas,benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes
(BTEX). Select soil samples were also analyzed for bulk density, specific gravity, and total
organic carbon (TOC).
Groundwater Samples
Grab groundwater samples were collected at each boring using a groundwater sampler
designed for use with the CPT drill rods. Upon reaching the desired depth for the
groundwater sample, the sample tool was pulled back 3 to 4 feet, exposing a temporary
5-foot long 0.75-inch diameter PVC well screen. Groundwater samples were extracted from
the sampling device using a small diameter bailer and transferred to appropriate sample
containers, placed in ziplock bags, and placed in an ice-filled cooler.
All groundwater samples were analyzed for TPH-gas and BTEX by EPA Method 8015/8020,
oxygenates(MTBE,TAME,DIPE,ETBA,and TBA), 1,2-didhloroethane (1,2-DCA),and
1,2-dibromoethane(EDB)by EPA Method 8260,by Chromolab,Inc.,located in Pleasanton,
California.
I .
SFOICPT REPORT 1.DOC1003670036 3-2
